Since its first printing in 1986, I have received very positive feedback to the selections in this book. As a textbook in the course Philosophy of Man, it is comprehensive in scope and deep in insights. The readings are not too difficult to understand, with the exception of Gabriel Marcel's "Primary and Secondary Reflection: The Existential Fulcrum". Thus, this revised edition contains a paragraph by paragraph interpretation of this difficult text by Marcel. When I ask students what reading they like best in the book, the constant reply is "A Phenomenology of Love". So I have made it a point to add "Scheler's Phenomenology of Love" in this revised edition. Except for these two revisions, there is no radical difference from the previous edition of the work. My hope remains—that this work will continue to make a difference in the reader's journey of becoming human.
